Crowbar Winners - Where Are They Now?

2004 saw a promising new Art Director emerge from the Crowbar awards — Tan Beng Beng. After graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with a diploma in Visual Communications, he won a whopping, 9 Crowbar awards and was immediately hired by Saatchi and Saatchi.

What inspired you to participate in the Crowbar Awards?
It was the only way I knew that would get me into the industry!

Crowbar Awards 2004, Silver - Print, Art Direction
Crowbar Awards 2004, Bronze - Print, Integrated Campaign

How has winning the Crowbar Awards helped you in your career?
It helped me get my work noticed. After winning, a few Creative Directors started calling me for interviews. It was invaluable in helping me get into my first agency.

Do you think the Crowbar Awards is a good platform for creative students to break into the creative industry and would you recommend them to participate in the Crowbar Awards? If yes, what advice would you give them?
Definitely! This is THE chance for students to show off their creativity and get noticed by people in the industry. My advice? Try, try and try till you succeed!

Do you have any suggestion as to how we can bring the Crowbar Awards to another level?
This is a hard one. It seems to be doing better every year! From being a local student award show to what it is today (a regional show), I think it has consistently done very well. I think the next level is to make it on par, if not better, than the D&AD Student Awards where they have their own exclusive network of winners. Through this network, they’re able to hook up with Creative Directors around the world.

Where do you get inspiration for new ideas?
The creative process is sometimes hard to articulate. But here goes nothing… My ‘standard recipe” for coming up with ideas: Start with a good brief. Then, gather all the information you need about the product or service, and let it “digest” for a while before you start “doodling”. Leave it for a while and do other things… like watching movies, reading a book or magazine, or surfing the web for nonsense! (You never know when an idea may just hit you.) Then, come up with many permutations of different ideas until the best few are shortlisted. Repeat.
